San Francisco's diligent TSA decided to lock our checked suitcase before loading it onto the plane. Quite thoughtful BUT we have no key. Good thinking to have all we needed for the first few days in our carry-on luggage. So first errand: after quadruple locking our apartment with its steel interior door and double locking our entry door, we headed off to the nearest locksmith (remembering that SOMEONE must remove the 1000s of romantic padlocks attached every year to the Ponte Vecchio). Following the graffiti, we found a helpful "iron worker" with a boltcutter. A bumbled request, some sign language, lots of humility and a cartoon got complete cooperation and an understanding sigh. Evidently he does a big business with us foreigners.
Gelato is the breakfast, lunch, dinner and mid-day snack of all tourists. We've joined the tribe.
