To scare winter away
Although strong Catholics, the Swiss in the Lötschental villages carve HUGE masks of wood, cow teeth and goat hair to scare the winter away. The men strap on enormous backpacks, cover themselves head to toe in furs, strap on the masks and run screaming wildly through the villages at night. This explains A LOT about the Swiss mentality. Perhaps Californians -in their own way - could get busy scaring the drought away?
