Preview of SFMOMA

The new SFMOMA opens May 14, but a few of us got to preview it without the teeming masses this morning. We barely scratched the surface of this glorious, provocative and astonishing collection. The building is breathtaking!! Seven stories of light, sculpture gardens, vistas and innovation. It is already pumping life and art-blood into the City. Saw friends, members of "our tribe" and were greeted by THE nicest staff and fellow art lovers.
We'll be coming back again and again.

Book Arts in Benicia

Who would think that the former Capital of California would have a vital Arts Center, Open Studios and be able to host a Book Arts Class? This "Chinese Sewing Wallet" with 13 hidden box-pockets was made, under the watchful eye of Laurie Whitehill (retired Special Collections Librarian at RISD), from a mere three, count 'em three, pieces of Nepalese paper. What a satisfying experience!! Now it's ready to fill, fold and close. It's going with me on my next trip!!!

Illuminated Books

A new twist on Illuminated Books: I remember being fascinated by the pages as the heat from the fire turned, scorched and ultimately engulfed the book. The not-so-antique novel is at the Marin MOCA Altered Book Show. The Constitution of the United States is bedside lighting, a timely read and something to inspire dreams.

Cast Party

It was actually a "Casting" Party as we watched Don Rich and is handsome assistant pour a bronze sculpture in Oakland. The whole event took just minutes but was part of a continuum of hundreds - if not thousands - of years of alchemy and knowledge. Primitive yet absolutely precise. And, according to the poets, always surprising.
